This Little Light of Mine is a simple, yet powerful gospel Christmas song, which speaks to the importance of sharing our faith in others and letting our light shine in the darkness. Whether you are a believer or not, This Little Light of Mine is a song that everyone can appreciate and enjoy. So let's take some time to learn the lyrics and listen to this classic gospel tune today.

When did the song first appear?

This Little Light of Mine first appears not as a song, but as a poem written by Edward G. Ivins, from Montana in 1925. The song quickly spread throughout the American Mid-West until in 1934 when the first recording of the song was captured. Alan and John Lomax, two American folklorist brothers, recorded Jim Boyd singing This Little Light of Mine at the Stat Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas. The song struck a chord with prisoners and it was further popularised by Doris McMurray during her time behind bars in Texas. You can even listen to her recording here at the Library of Congress!

Is the song we hear today the same song?

Good question, and the answer is a no. The modern version of the song is thought to have originated and written by American composer, Harry Dixon Loes. Harry took the song and reworked the lyrics to create a song that was originally titled, This Little Light of Ours which was meant to be an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement.

Are the lyrics actually a reference to the bible?

Yes! Throughout the Bible there is mention of a "light" in reference to bringing light to where there is darkness. For instance, in the book of Matthew, chapter 5 verses 14-16, it goes on to mention:

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

This is one of many scriptures taken from the Bible often cited as inspiration for the lyrics to the amazing Christmas gospel song This Little Light of Mine.
